Chapter Twenty-Two

Lucian

The police station looks quiet as I walk up the street towards the small brick building, and the parking lot is full of squad cars not being used. I wonder why for such a small New England town, that they have such a large number of vehicles.

I mean it’s not like there’s a lot of crime in this place. Well, except for me, keeping them busy. I smile to myself as I think about the little backwater cops trying to piece together all my victims.

I kill them each so differently that there should be no connections in my MO or anything. Really, no one is going to believe that there’s a real vampire out there eating people, so the next best assumption is a serial killer. But they usually have a certain modus operandi and signature, of which none of my killings have, except the fact that they are drained of their blood.

Some though I don’t even drain all the way. I snack, taking multiple victims in a feeding instead of draining just one bone dry. Again it might throw the cops off my tracks for a while longer and make it harder to figure out what is really happening here. Eventually though I’m going to run out of meals.

Touring with the band helps. When we go to new places, there is a whole new buffet to choose from. Scattering my food across the country also helps keep things spread out and not lumped in just my home town.

The band has been home way too much. We need to go back out on the road. Europe would be a nice change.

I wonder if Red would go with me.

Standing now, outside the front doors of this shitty little police station, I sigh to myself.

Here goes to convincing these douche bags I’m not a killer. Wish me luck Red.

My fingers wrap around the cold metal door handle, as I close my eyes and give myself one last run through of my speech that I’ve been working on since I left my last meal in her final resting place.

I was just trying to help the man in the alley. Someone took off just as I came outside. Honestly, I just wanted to help, and that rookie cop with a happy trigger finger shot at me. I’m the good guy here. Please call off the warrant.

Something stops me just as I go to pull on the bar and make my entrance. It’s a pleading sound, but not around me, it’s inside of me. It’s in my head, so softly and barely there.

“Lucian! Help! Please!”

“Red?” I ask aloud, pulling my hand away from the door, and turning to look around me, just in case I missed her coming up behind me. But no, she’s not there. Of course she’s not here. No one can sneak up on me. She’s inside me, and she’s scared.

Stepping into the shadows, I close my eyes again, and take a deep breath in through my nose. I focus on her words, on the fear laced in them, and I call her to me.
